The National Cheese Trail

Located on Tasmania’s south-east coast, due east of Hobart, Bream Creek is a rural settlement that began its modern life in the 1870s with a school, churches and small dairy farms. Early farmers soon discovered that the soils and climate were well suited to dairying, and before long there were enough farms supplying milk to the nearby Pembroke butter factory.

Today Bream Creek remains a working rural district, but its economy has broadened beyond dairying to include cool-climate viticulture, mixed farming and food tourism. The best-known example is Bream Creek Vineyard, planted in 1974 and now one of Tasmania’s oldest commercial vineyards. The wider district is also associated with oysters, local produce and agritourism, reflected in its farmers’ market and its place on Tasmania’s food-and-wine trail.

Tim’s (Tas Cheesery) personal recommendations are to visit in late summer or early autumn when apples and pears are at their peak, and to spend a morning at the local farmers’ market held on the first Sunday of each month. A walk along nearby Marion Bay Beach shouldn’t be missed either.
